Another ‘future-under-discussion’ regional caravan park has received overwhelming support for the local community to carry on.
After seeking community submissions on the future of Moe Gardens Caravan Park in Moe, Victoria’s Latrobe City Council says it received 223 submissions … with the vast majority supporting the retention of the caravan park as a low-cost accommodation option to attract short-stay visitors.
The council will be presented with a report at next February’s council meeting that details the options available to continue to operate the caravan park at its current location.
The caravan park is situated on 3.2 hectares and used to be located on the outskirts of Moe township, but as housing development has grown in Moe, the park is now located within the heart of Moe township.

The council says the use of the caravan park has evolved significantly since the start of the lease in 2008.
Latrobe City Council Mayor, Sharon Gibson, said it was important that the community understood the next steps.
“It’s important the community understands the park isn’t closing, we’re not shutting the park – Council is legally required to go out and talk with the community and wider stakeholders ahead of the current lease coming to an end,” she said. “We have heard what the community has had to say and in fact, about 80% of the feedback we received supported keeping it as a caravan park, which really says it all.
The Mayor said the report will return to Council in February so it can have a good look at the future of the caravan park, and what comes next in the best interests of the community.
“People want somewhere affordable to stay – whether it’s for a quick getaway or a short break,” councillor Gibson said. “It also gives travellers more options when they’re heading into Latrobe City.”
Last week, a survey conducted by Colac Otway Shire Council revealed that 93% of respondents favoured camping continuing at Meredith Park at the Lake Colac reserve, south west of Melbourne.

We stayed a couple of nights recently while doing a short tour of our region. Friends were all surprised to hear we had stayed there so the perception is not good.
We had no problems, the amenities are old but reasonably tidy but some of the the long term sites look very unloved. If everything was ring managed I’m sure it would be a good for tourism.
Paul runs a good park, he’s friendly, approachable and easy to deal with. I stored my van there a few years ago and he could not have been more pleasant please don’t close the park, it will drive tourists away from the town, is that what Council wants?
I’d say immediate upgrades are needed.
Well run parks attract people to towns and Moe definitely needs to attract tourists.
Tourists spend money.
And there needs to be an influx of people coming to Moe.
Let’s do something positive for Moe it sure needs it.
One of the major reasons caravan parks throughout Australia are in trouble is their pricing. If they were cheaper, they might all be full most of the time.
sounds like the park needs a bit of an upgrade.
The caravan park in Mt Pleasant Sth Australia was in a similar position.
Got rid of the permanents, upgraded a lot and now it’s a fantastic park.
