‘I drive caravans around the country for a living … and I absolutely love it!’

Published: October 29, 2025

While veteran grey nomads might need two hands to count the number of times they have towed a van across the Nullarbor, Wes Bond might need more than that.

The professional caravan mover, who shifts rigs across the country for a whole manner of reasons, reckons he tackles the Treeless Plain about 25 times a year … and he’s been in his current line of work since 2017.

To say caravanning is in Wes’s blood is an understatement. He’s been hitting the open road in a variety of rigs since the 1970s and, over the years, has owned 20-plus caravans.

Nowadays though, what he terms as his semi-retirement gig means it’s other people’s vans he tows.

“I am over corporate style and nowadays I do what suits me and that is the most enjoyable part,” he said. “There is always something happening on the road and I chat to truckies, listen to podcasts or e-books, and chat on phone as my Starlink mini works the whole way … the day just seems to go.”

Wes’s service involves him flying out to collect a customer’s vehicle, driving it where it needs to go, and then flying home again. He says he sleeps in motels rather than the customer’s vehicle, sends them rig photos daily … and he’s punctual.

“People book their holiday airfares on the date I say the vehicle will be in Cairns or Perth or Broome or Kununurra or Darwin etc and I never let anyone down,” Wes said. “I book a homeward bound flight to gel with their incoming flight.”

Checking out the Great Australian Bight ,.. again!

The reasons why people use Wes’s services are many and varied. He says there are holidaymakers who want to see Australia but don’t have the time to do both ways; nomads who are called away from their trips for family reasons; motor dealers who don’t want to miss out on a sale; people who travel on the Indian Pacific or the Ghan and want to meet their car and van there; and there’s medical episodes of clients.

“In one incident, the owner of a caravan fell down a cliff on a walk and passed away in North Queensland,” said Wes. “And I had to go and get his 4WD and caravan and drive it to his son’s in Melbourne.”

A more cheerful job involved delivering a new LandCruiser 300 and flash new caravan, worth a combined $300,000, to someone in Port Hedland who had won it in a draw.

“It went to a young widower father with a couple of kids who was working in a general store,” said Wes. “He had a 20-year-old ‘Cruiser and van and he loved the look of his prize … I was so happy for him.”

Wes says he is probably away from home 250-300 days a year … and loves life behind the wheel. But when it comes to holidays, it’s a different story.

“We live at Maroubra Beach so there is no room for a van in our lifestyle now,” he said. “This year, we have been to the USA, Canada and Alaska … but we flew over, then travelled by coach, and ship.”

And not a caravan in sight!
