A Victorian council has closed all of its authority-run caravan parks and banned free camping as it ramps up precautions against the coronavirus.
Moyne Shire in the south west of the state covers towns such as Port Fairy, Mortlake and Peterborough.
Chief executive Bill Millard said the decision to close caravan parks followed recommendations from Prime Minister Scott Morrison to limit domestic travel.
“Council-operated caravan parks will close, with current holidaymakers told to vacate as soon as possible,” Mr Millard said. “To further discourage visitors to the region, council will also ban use of free camping sites, which will be enforced by our local laws officers.”
The council told the Standard newspaper that current and future bookings will be offered a refund or credit, and no further bookings are being taken.
Mr Millard said people would still be able to contact the now closed Port Fairy and Mortlake customer service centres by phone.
Mr Millard told The Standard last week he would be discussing support measures for businesses with the council as the situation evolved.
The council announced its ordinary meeting scheduled Tuesday was postponed.
It is a bit ironic that the Chief Executive’s surname is MILLARD.
South Gippsland has shut all shire owned parks.
