It may be a destination much loved by grey nomads and other travellers, but the appeal of Coffs Harbour is certainly nothing to do with the road that runs through its heart.
The Pacific Highway at the New South Wales mid north coast town has just been voted the worst section of road in the state. As part of the National Roads and Motorists’ Association’s ‘Seeing Red on Roads’ survey, nearly 12,000 motorists voted for their least favourite bit of road in NSW/ACT.
Although the Coffs Harbour section of the Pacific Highway has been duplicated for years, it runs straight through the town and is littered with traffic lights. During peak periods, especially at holiday times, it can become a complete car park.
“The Pacific Highway topped the list for the worst road in NSW because of congestion, not enough lanes and poor road surfaces,” said NRMA Motoring & Services President, Kyle Loades. “While the full duplication of the Pacific Highway should remain the priority, with the population of the Coffs Harbour area set to double in the next 20 years we should also be looking towards ways we can ease the congestion for locals – such as building a bypass.”
