The latest dingo attack on a human on Queensland’s Fraser Island has thrown up more questions about what can be done to keep residents and tourists safe.
Some locals are pointing the finger of blame at visitors who are increasingly taking ‘selfies’ with the wild dogs, and allegedly offering food as a way of drawing them closer for the photo. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has once again warned visitors not to interact with dingoes.
Earlier this week, 25-year-old Dave Allen apparently walked down to the beach to make a phone call near the township of Happy Valley when he was attacked by a pack of dingoes.
His clothes were ripped to shreds as three animals launched a savage attack. Mr Allen suffered puncture wounds to his head, legs and backside before managing to scramble to the nearby dingo fence.
He was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital to be treated for his injuries, and experts say he was lucky to escape without any life-threatening injuries.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has warned visitors not to walk or jog along the island’s beaches alone at night, and urged them to be extra vigilant. Rangers will increase patrols in the area to monitor dingo behaviour and pass the information on to tourists.
Do you take ‘selfies’with wildlife? What can be done to stop dingo attacks on Fraser Island? Comment below
On August 17th 1980, a dingo took Azaria Chamberlain from a tent at the old campsite at Ayers Rock now Uluru.
For years lindy was a murderer until her sentence was quashed some 32 years later. we must make these wild dogs frightened or at least wary of humans. when I was a kid in the Eastern wheat belt of WA, there was a bounty on dingo scalps as they were killing far too many sheep.
I am not promoting that type of thing on Fraser, but maybe a cull of sorts might help to get them back in the bush. I feel for the man who was attacked. how frightening to be attacked by a pack of wild animals
I just wish people would these these poor animals ALONE!!!!!! If you keep away from them there would be no problems. There is virtually no food on Fraser for them so I guess that is why they are wandering around looking for food. Just keep away and leave them alone. as for the Azaria case huh! Will we ever know the truth??
How about the Rangers and those in charge start FEEDING the dingos…laying out carcasses etc so they won’t be so hungry that they attack anything that moves or resembles food!! There has been a systematic effort to starve these animals into extinction on Fraser Island as it makes more profit for the Gov’t as a tourist destination than a dingo sanctuary! Humans are meant to be custodians of animal…all animals…not their worst enemy!
Correct Jules, we seem to forget that we need to live along side wild animals on this planet and that humans dont have a right of passage on this earth to do what we want where we want. Just look at the picture, says it all, bunch of bogans. An animal will do what it needs to survive, it doesent go to the supermarket to get its food, so if it see’s a potential food source it will try to get it, I dont blame them for trying, humans are the ones destroying their habitat and food sources, and we think we are the clever ones on this planet, yes right…..
The public has been warned not to jog on the beach at Fraser because of dingoes. Any idea if there are warnings about cycling on Fraser’s beaches?
