The oldest caravan park in Queensland is to be demolished, and a new housing estate will be built on the land.
Newmarket Gardens, which had 100 sites all designated for tourists, had been operating as a van park since 1957 … until it closed last year.
The 2.5-hectare site on Brisbane’s northside is located next to Enoggera Creek and within striking distance of Brisbane CBD.
The park, which has long been a favourite with grey nomads. was put on the market late last year 2021 and has now sold for more than $13 million.
Newmarket Gardens was owned and operated by Robyn Wright, whose parents were the original owners. Ms Wright announced in July last year she would be shutting the site after her husband Derek suffered a health scare.
Sales data show it sold on December 6, 2021 for $13.660 million to Blake Topping and John Peter Rimmington.
The Courier Mail reports that the same duo have an approved development application over the site and an adjoining block at 18 Somme Street.
Documents approved by Brisbane City Council show the plan is to transform the iconic site into a new housing estate.
Developers have been given the green light to subdivide and crew 17 new residential lots, ranging from 404 sqm to 725 sqm.
The pre-1946 home, currently on Ashgrove Ave will be relocated to lot 17, on Somme St. It will be renovated with just the external stars and stumps to be removed.
The Courier Mail reports that the remaining 1.6ha of the site will be transformed into a district park and returned to the council.
