Cabins continue their long march into caravan parks

Published: September 14, 2017

The march of cabins continues apace with news that eight of the structures are to be installed at a caravan park in Oberon, New South Wales.

LDL Tourist Parks made the announcement just a few weeks after taking over the lease of the Jenolan Caravan Park.

While there is no suggestion that the cabins at this park have come at the expense of spots for touring caravans, it does reflect a changing atmosphere at many of Australia’s van parks.

“The new cabins will be great … they are one-bedroom and all self-contained and should be finished next weekend,” manager, Rebecca Setter, told the Oberon Review. “This brings the total number of cabins to 20, which means we can accommodate 80 people on any given night … we still have plenty of room for on-site vans and campsites.”

The park says it still has sites that cater to large caravans; motorhomes and 5th wheelers,  has  a dump point and a modern amenities block; and is a short walk to Oberon’s main street.

“We’ve been so busy with bike clubs and motoring groups, and now spring is here we are fully booked to the end of October with weddings, school holidays and Mayfield Garden visitors,” Ms Setter told the Oberon Review.  “We will be very busy over the next couple of months, but that’s good for Oberon.”

As both a motorcyclist and a motorhomer, I’m all for cabins BUT not at the expense of caravan sites. Our MH is 31′ so there are limited spots in parks already for a vehicle our size. We prefer caravan parks but are not limited to them as we are fully self contained, so free/low cost camping is not an issue. When on the bikes however, we prefer to stay at parks, again for the security and facilities available that aren’t available in hotels/motels.

With the cost of caravans becoming a major issue, caravan park cabins are becoming an alternative to people who only travel occasionally. The increase in cabins reduces the space available for caravans and people who live full time or nearly full time on the road and then they put up the price because of limited space.

Caravan parks can no longer blame “Free” camping spots as a problem as we don’t hear from the motel industry saying that caravan cabins are taking their revenue.

Very true.
Would be nice to see more free camp spots open up. They are too few around cities and coastal areas if they exsist at all.

Caravan parks are no longer affordable to the long term traveler or retirees living on a pension. More freedom sites are needed.
