Full steam ahead ... Grey nomads are heading back to Tassie.

All the signs are that grey nomads and other travellers are seizing the opportunity to get across to Tassie now that the island state is opening up again.

The Spirit of Tasmania has seen booking numbers rise as the Apple Isle allows visitors from all Australians states and territories besides Victoria.

Travellers seeking to pass through Victoria to catch the ferry in Melbourne are allowed to do so as long as they don’t stop anywhere other than to get fuel.

The Examiner newspaper reports that while numbers are expected to remain below pre-Covid figures for some time, the bookings were a positive sign for the company.

Spirit of Tasmania CEO Bernard Dwyer said people were taking advantage of the certainty around travel.

“The easing of restrictions provides more certainty for everyone,” he said. “It is also positive to see that people, particularly regular travellers from Queensland and New South Wales, have the confidence to travel again.”

Mr Dwyer told the Examiner that the comany had noticed that many travellers considered seaborne travel as a safer choice with the option of remaining socially distanced throughout the journey.

Mr Dwyer also said people were re-booking after cancelling earlier in the year.

With bookings increasing Mr Dwyer said ensuring staff and passengers were still safe from Covid-19 was a priority.

According to the Daily Examiner, the Spirit of Tasmania takes more than 350,000 travellers to and from Tasmania each year, but has been severely impacted by Covid-19, and border closures.

With Victoria today recording its 11th consecutive day of no coronavirus cases, there is hope that borders in Tasmania and elsewhere will soon open to residents of the state.
