Unlimited travel allowed throughout Queensland

Published: May 31, 2020

Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, has announced that unlimited travel will be allowed throughout the state from midday tomorrow.

The rule relaxation will allow overnight stays, and should see more grey nomads back on the road enjoying attractions within the Sunshine State.

The borders with other states and territories though remain closed for now.

“Our state’s outstanding response to the Covid-19 pandemic has allowed restrictions to be lifted ahead of a planned move to Stage Two originally scheduled for June 12,” Ms Palaszczuk tweeted. “Start planning your holiday! We’re opening Queensland for Queenslanders from noon tomorrow.”

Hiking camping and other recreational activities will also be allowed in state and national parks.

Ms Palaszczuk also announced gatherings of up to 20 people would also be allowed.

She said restaurants, cafes, and pubs operating under a COVID-safe checklist would also be able to increase their total number of patrons from 10 to 20.

Despite intense pressure from Federal Government, other state leaders and the tourism industry, Queensland insists it wants to see a drastic reduction in coronavirus transmission in other states before it decides to open up its borders.

“The strong approach that the Queensland Government has taken, based on expert medical and health advice, has saved lives and it will continue to save lives,” Police Minister Mark Ryan said.

However, the Deputy Opposition Leader, Tim Mander, says the borders should be opened to coincide with school holidays in the southern states.

“Queenslanders have been successful in flattening the curve, so now it’s time to make sure we kickstart the economy,” he said. “We have the tourism industry, local businesses, the hospitality industry on its knees at the moment, so we need to loosen these restrictions as quickly as possible.”
