Bushfire forces closure of Great Northern Highway

Published: November 16, 2018

A huge fast-moving bushfire is threatening lives and property on the Great Northern Highway near the Pardoo Roadhouse.

A bushfire watch and act has been issued for people at or near Pardoo Roadhouse in the Shire of East Pilbara. The alert level for this fire has been upgraded as the fire is approaching the roadhouse.

People at or near Pardoo Roadhouse, east of the De Grey River including including De Grey Station, Pardoo Station, Goldsworthy, Shay Gap, Warralong Community and Yarrie Mine Camp are warned to leave the area or get ready to actively defend.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the fire was moving fast in a north-westerly direction and was unpredictable.

“There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching in the area and conditions are changing,” the DFES warning read. “If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear.”

Firefighters are actively fighting the blaze, with road closures in place on the Great Northern Highway in both directions from Marble Bar Road to Sandfire Roadhouse, Boreline Road and Cape Keraudren Road.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke.

Pardoo Roadhouse and Cape Keraudren Caravan Park are closed.

The fire has been burning since November 4. Currently there has been 1,335,000 hectares burnt.
