A massive upgrade to a caravan park in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has been well received by visitors, but been given a giant thumbs-down from nearby residents.
Locals say the overflow of cars from upgrades to the multimillion-dollar caravan park in Mudjimba has caused a ‘nightmare’ parking situation.
The Sunshine Coast Daily reports that the council now plans to tackle the issue by introducing short stay 15-minute parking bays along one of the busiest streets in town – a plan that residents have said won’t help the situation.
Kerry Lindemann said that since renovations to the caravan park were completed last year, they had struggled to have family come visit his house on Cottonwood Street.
He told the Sunshine Cost Daily that the situation was made worse by people holidaying in the caravan park bringing multiple vehicles.
A Sunshine Coast Council spokeswoman said each site within the van park was allocated one car space in addition to their van/tent, ‘which is common practice within the holiday park and the wider accommodation industry’.
She said the council’s decision to change the parking time limits on Cottonwood Street was a positive step towards addressing congestion.
“This change has been made in consultation with Mudjimba Beach Holiday Park who advised that there may be queues on Cottonwood Street due to people waiting to check in,” she told the Sunshine Coast Daily.
The spokeswoman said the parking limitations would create a 15-minute parking zone between 9am and 2pm seven days a week, which would ‘encourage turnover and reduce the number of cars circling the precinct looking for a space’.
The Sunshine Coast Daily reports that the Mudjimba Beach Holiday Park received a $1.5m upgrade to its amenities block, which was completed in time for the holidays in November 2022.
The old amenities building was removed to make way for green space. Some residents believe it is this space that should have been considered for extra parking.
Maria Bateup, who lives next door to the park, said cars were driving dangerously on the road during the busy periods.
“On a weekend, it’s absolutely ridiculous,” she told the Sunshine Coast Daily. “You just can’t park anywhere and it’s a nightmare.”
The Mudjimba Beach Holiday Park brought in $1.7m for the council and welcomed 19,184 visitors in 2022.
