A ban on plastic water bottles in America’s Grand Canyon National Park is finally to be put in place.
As reported some months ago in the Nomad, the original ban plan was put n hold after the Coca-Cola company, which is a large donor to national parks, raised concerns about it.
The delay triggered a huge protest and it seems people power has finally won out.
“The record clearly shows intense public scrutiny forced this abrupt U-turn,” said Jeff Ruch, the executive director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.
The ban of containers smaller than one gallon takes effect within 30 days. Arizona’s Grand Canyon has long been sullied by excesses of litter, with plastic bottles being the most common item of rubbish found in the area.
A similar ban on the sale of water bottles in Utah’s Zion National Park in 2008 eliminated 60,000 plastic bottles from the park in its first year.
