With thousands of families and younger holidaymakers about to join grey nomads at caravan parks and camping areas across the country, patience and tolerance will be the new watchwords during the busy Easter period.
Even in remote areas such as WA’s Pilbara region, authorities are warning that it is going to be one of the busiest Easter camping seasons in a decade.
National parks there are gearing up for a huge influx of visitors, drawn in by the promise of impressive waterfalls, green growth and swimming holes after particularly heavy summer rains.
“Karijini will be pumping this time of year because of all the rain we have had, so that will be a popular location,” South Hedland Senior Sergeant Dean Snashall told the North West Telegraph newspaper. “There will be a lot of traffic police on the road over the Easter and school holiday period with a focus on the highways.”
Karratha State Emergency Service deputy rescue officer Rob Graham said ideally SES members would not have to put their training into practice.
“One of the biggest messages to get out is don’t drive tired or fatigued,” he said. “We travel long distances in the Pilbara so take that time to have a break, stop, take a drink, have a walk around the car and carry on … it beats pushing yourself that little bit further and not making it.”
