Port Pirie is keen to offer visitors a brand new Recreational Vehicle (RV) park, but the South Australian town appears stumped as to where it should be.
Port Pirie Regional Council has appealed for the public’s help in identifying a suitable location for a Port Pirie.
The Recorder newspaper reports that there is currently a free overnight parking location for RVs near Globe Oval, but the council hopes an improved RV Park could further drive visitation and spending.
Mayor Leon Stephens said the council is hoping to now create a more ‘inviting’ place for people to stay, and that ‘expressions of interest’ were open to private businesses and private investment, as well as public land.
“As you would imagine, we can’t be supporting private businesses but we will definitely do our best to make sure that something happens in the right place,” he told the Recorder. “We are looking forward to having an RV park … I don’t know if there is a ‘perfect’ place for it but it is certainly something we will put a lot of effort into.”
The council says RV locations must have relative proximity to the Port Pirie CBD, be of suitable size and capacity, and provide pleasant amenity to promote Port Pirie.
The location also would be subject to cost effective access and provision to suitable services, accessible larger vehicles, and development approval.
The Expressions of Interest period closes on December 18.
Am I missing the point? There appears to be three rv parks in Port Pirie already. Are they looking to supply a free camping area? Don’t think the current park operators will be pleased!
