The Queensland state government has published a list of the most popular national park destinations for campers during the school holidays.
Fraser Island with 9290 campers, Cooloola Recreation Area with 8373 and Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area with 7043 were the top destinations in the state.
Tourism Fraser Coast tourism manager Robbie Cornelius told the Fraser Cost Chronicle that the figures were healthy and would continue to grow.
“Certainly we’re starting to see the tourism industry, not only locally but I guess statewide, moving into more of a recovery mode,” Mr Cornelius said. “We’re seeing some positive signs in terms of visitor expenditure and domestic and international visitor numbers so not only in relation to camping, but to visitation in general, I think we’ll continue to see some pretty positive movements in that regard.”
Recreation Minister Steve Dickson told the Chronicle that upgrade and maintenance work helped attract more visitors to the parks.
“We’re investing more and more in facilities and infrastructure to protect the natural environment and we’re encouraging people to visit these pristine natural areas,” Mr Dickson said.
There are 305 national parks across the state.
