Travel restrictions in WA regions to be further eased

Published: May 26, 2020

The slow journey back to some sort of normality for the grey nomad lifestyle continues to gather pace.

With states like South Australia having already signalled the return of full intrastate travel, Western Australia has now announced it will further ease its regional travel restrictions from Friday.

WA’s internal borders were reduced from 13 regions to four one week ago.

Premier Mark McGowan said the only places which would now remain off limits to some would be the Kimberley and some remote areas.

“From Friday, travel around WA will be permitted everywhere except the areas bounded by the Commonwealth biosecurity determination and 274 remote Aboriginal communities,” he said. “We are working closely with the Federal Government on a way forward to remove the Commonwealth biosecurity areas from Friday, June 5.”

Mr McGowan said further consultation around lifting remote community restrictions would need to happen.

Australia’s North West Tourism chief executive Natasha Mahar said the easing of restrictions might give businesses a chance to salvage something from the season.

“It’s really about trying to overcome the last eight weeks and the haemorrhaging that’s occurred,” she said. “Hopefully there’ll be a lot of people down south wanting to escape the cold weather. We’re ready to give them a warm welcome.”

Mr McGowan insist he still expects the state’s interstate border to remain in place for months to come, and he urged West Australians to travel within the state to support local businesses and tourism operators who had ‘been through hell’.

“For now, we have WA all to ourselves, so let’s make the most of it,” he said. “Go out and wander around our great state.”

If I travel Queensland…where will I be able to stay? Are the free camps open?

On this mornings W A news, 26th May, it was announced that 4 people enroute from Doha to Victoria have been tested positive for Covid19 yesterday. They were in the mandatory 14 day quarantine in a Perth Hotel. We haven’t had any local infections for a number of days. So you can understand why our Premier and for that matter most West Aussies don’t want our borders open yet.

We can’t trust the Commonwealth Government bureaucrats that let ships that have reported that they have crew members with high temperatures. So now we have more cases here in W.A.. We need the Commonwealth Government to sack bureaucrats that thick they can just do what they like. The tax payers pay then to do a job and they stuff up sack them.
