New ‘responsive’ resurfacing contracts sees NT step up its war on potholes

Published: February 29, 2024

As grey nomads are well aware, the state of the roads in many parts of Australia – particularly in regional areas – are not all they could be.

While the war on potholes may seem like an unwinnable one, various authorities across the country do keep trying.

The NT Government, for example, has just awarded a $100 million panel contract to five contractors over the next five years to ensure quick, responsive and regular bitumen resurfacing works across the Territory’s road networks.

The bituminous works will be carried out in all of the NT’s regions including Central Australia, the Barkly, Big Rivers, Top End regions…  and include urban roads in Darwin, Palmerston and Litchfield.

The contract is split into a series of schedules and includes large asphalt works, large resealing works, smaller asphalt works such as footpaths and carparks as well as smaller resealing jobs.

The Government says the panel contract will cut red tape, save businesses time and ensure asphalting, sealing and resealing works can be rolled out when and where they are needed.

“In the Territory, our roads are vital lifelines that connect communities, and provide work for Territorians and their families,” said Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Joel Bowden.  “The Territory Labor Government is ensuring quick response time for roads that are damaged and impacted by weather events … sealing roads across the breadth of the Northern Territory is a priority of the Territory Labor Government and makes our roads safer for Territorians and visitors.”

The Minister said the investment in the NT’s roads would continue to ensure improvements in year-round connectivity, and to unlock further economic opportunities.

We have just returned to WA after 5months traveling NT to QLD back in Kununurra now and I’d say Stuart & Barkly highways need a lot of work also Victoria Highway – really the main connecting states highway are bad especially with all the transport vehicles and traveler’s now on them. I know a lot is caused by weather problems however just filling in holes is not the answer .

Whatever happened to the great idea of recycling glass to repair roads. Don’t know the process behind it but it may save using crude oil. Also and unfortunately, contractors seem to cost lots and lots of money and i am sure that partly accounts for the prohibitive cost of roadworks.
