A new rest stop has been unveiled in the Queensland town of Ipswich as authorities seek to persuade grey nomads to linger longer in the area.
The $190,000 facility at Albert Theaker Park on the corner of Champions Way and the Cunningham Hwy at Willowbank was funded by the State Government.
“What we’ve created is a space where people who are touring can stop and take a short break or park overnight in their van,” Division 10 councillor David Pahlke told the Queensland Times. “It is important to note it’s not a camp site, it’s a rest area to encourage people to spend a little longer in Ipswich and help manage driver fatigue.
The park has picnic tables and shelter, rubbish bins, drink fountain and toilets and will have a noticeboard to let visitors know about things to see and do in Ipswich.
Economic development and tourism committee deputy chairman Councillor Wayne Wendt welcomed the new facilities.
“Being only about 20 minutes from the city centre it’s in a convenient location close to great attractions, he told the Queensland Times. “Drive tourism is becoming more popular, so it’s important Ipswich has facilities such as this to make it easier for visitors to stay longer in our city.”

Yes. Nice to see a new one being opened instead of being closed down.
It’s nice to hear of a council that understands the needs of GN’s and encourages us to stay and rest. I certainly will use this facility when I am up this way. Thanks Ipswich Council!
Good on you Ipswich, certainly a good move forward, but why haven’t you included a dump point?
Probably one of the hardest things for a traveller to get rid of legally.
Ha funny on 20.01.17 we stopped there when we had a problem with the truck, Decided we couldnt leave the caravan there and get the truck fixed so booked into Willowbank Caravan Park for the day. Didnt see much in the way of signage. But good to know for the future.
Generally, if we want to spend more time in an area we will go to a caravan park. Wouldn’t unhook and leave the van in a rest stop, And 20 mins to the town is a bit far for some of us oldies to be walking.
Great work Ipswich Council, hope others may follow.
Great move Ipswich Council.
Good to see a Pro Active council working for the interests of travellers and local business owners.
