Grey nomads were well represented as record crowds flocked to the southern hemisphere’s biggest rodeo at Mount Isa on the weekend.
For many travellers from metropolitan Australia, the chance to see cowboys ride one-tonne bucking bulls is one that is hard to resist … and the ultimate in ‘country’ experiences.
While Mount Isa has a permanent population of 18,000, a whopping 20,000 visitors were attracted to the town in Queensland’s west for the first two days of the rodeo.
“The Isa Rodeo has the biggest prize pool, so it means the competitors that are coming out are actually working for over $230,000 in prize money plus buckles to take home,” general manager Natalie Flecker told the ABC . “It’s the best of the best — it really is.”
Events included barrel racing, breakaway roping, team roping, rope and tie, steer wrestling, bull riding, saddle bronc, and bareback bronc riding.
