Caravan rolls on Tassie’s East Tamar Highway

It’s been a shocking week for caravan accidents in Australia.

Just a day or so after a serious accident involving a caravanner on the Newell Highway in New South Wales, a van has rolled on Tassie’s East Tamar Highway at Dilston, just north of Launceston.

The caravan and the Nissan Pathfinder towing it, reportedly blocked both southbound lanes until the caravan was towed away.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel attended the scene, but no serious injuries were reported.

In the other crash in New South Wales that we reported on earlier this week, emergency services rushed to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at Eumungerie, about 38 kilometres north of Dubbo. One of the vehicles was towing a caravan.

Again, it is thought no serious injuries were sustained, although a 60-year old woman was trapped for some time before being freed.

Although it is not yet known whether the weather played a part in either of these accidents, police in areas currently being affect by heavy rains are urging all motorists to take extra care.

With severe weather impacting Tasmania, police are trying to caution people to take care.

“With intense rain and flooding impacting the state, police urge the community to heed the warnings and prepare to make informed decisions to keep safe,” said Assistant Commissioner Jonathan Higgins.

In areas that are impacted by intense rains and flooding – conditions outside and on the roads will be unsafe – and police urge people to restrict all non-essential travel.

“Where it’s essential to travel on the roads – to safely evacuate an area – drive with extreme caution, and never attempt to drive through or enter flood waters,” Assistant Commissioner Higgins said. “I urge everyone in the forecast areas to keep up to date with warnings and advice from official emergency services including the Bureau of Meteorology and TasAlert.”
