Not surprising. We came down the Bruce last Thursday and it is crazy how fast some drivers go with caravan hitched – over 100kph and overtaking, with van swaying away!

Perhaps I should add that I am not saying speeding was a factor in this particular accident – I don’t know what caused it, but my point is over the last couple of years we have seen many vans being towed at speeds that we considered excessive, and they seem to be accidents on the way to happen. Why are some people in such a rush to get somewhere so that they can sit in their chair and gaze into the distance!

Having done some 60 thousand odd klms over the last 3 years, I see 3 factors with people towing vans do not seem to care about. gross overload, Van not level with tow vehicle and speed. Also when talking to many van owners, they do not have these vans serviced regularly.
I have a problem with my van at the moment, ? BRAKES or bearings. I have only done 6,000 klms since last service.
I think it’s madness what some people are doing.

Time for some sort of testing, some sort of regulations saying you cant just go from taking your 6×4 trailer to the dump every 3 months to hooking onto nearly 3 ton of caravan, having no real idea of loading it properly and heading down the highway. The same as all us old truckies had to to do.Because you may not care but I certainly dont want you hurtling down the road towards me.There should be random weighing the same as trucks also. Cheers Stevo.
