Caravanner suffers neck injury in highway rollover

Published: September 25, 2019

Two grey nomads have survived a dramatic caravan rollover on the Bruce Highway near Carmila, about 100 kilometres south of Mackay in Queensland.

An ‘elderly’ woman was treated for a neck injury, while an ‘elderly’ man was not thought to have suffered any injuries.

Both were taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

A spokesman for the Queensland Police Service said the caravan had flipped onto its roof on the highway.

A video provided to the Daily Mercury newspaper shows a caravan in pieces blocking one lane of the two-lane road. The paper reports it also shows a car – which is understood to have been towing the caravan – on its side with belongings strewn over the embankment.

A dog which was travelling with the couple was also removed from the vehicle.

The crash happened yesterday afternoon. The circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated.

There you go…..The Bruce Highway again.OK, perhaps it was not the fault of the Bruce highway. It is such a dangerous road, and constantly referred as the worst highway in Australia.
Good news is not fatal casualties.
Hope that had full insurance.
Drive to conditions on our roads.

Another factor that can be applied to all highways freeways streets roads is people overtaking illegally dangerously and stupidly. Putting everyone at risk

The highway from Rockhampton really needs upgrading, after 20years i travelled to Mackay from Friday to Monday last week.
I must admit 30 Klms from Rocky the road is crap to drive on and parts of the road is just not up to standards. MAIN ROADS DEPARTMENT need a kick up the bum

Once again, half a story and people laying blame.

This section of the highway has had a lot of work done on it. Large warning signs in this area stating ‘Fatigue Zone’ due to many accidents in this vicinity.

Today we stopped @ a red light in Kuranda, road works so one-way traffic & blow me down didn’t a wee car overtake & pass. Was stopped by a worker as several buses were coming through on green & he/she/it had to reverse. No hope, I rest my case!!!

So, if the road is that bad then slow down…I traveled Brisbane to Cairns, and there is lots of road works in places, flood, drought, it all takes it toll on roads, so drive to the conditions..as for this case, who knows what the cause was, so dont blame the road or anything yet, and dont start saying we need special licences to tow vans…I have a car licence, a boat licence, a loader operators ticket, and I still see poor driving/boating, so I’m not convinced a special caravan towing licence is
the answer…in the mean time, everyone take it easy.

There is not a week goes by where there isn’t a caravan accident. Ok the numbers pale into insignificance when compared to car accidents, however it would be really useful if the authorities could make available the reasons for caravan accidents so that we can all see any underlying issues that can be addressed. I see on a weekly basis overloaded and improperly loaded caravans and tow vehicles travelling at 110Km on the M! in Queensland and I wonder whether this is a primary reason for accidents. it is difficult to educate people when there is no real evidence to support any assertions for accidents. On the other hand you can’t really fix stupid.

all comments here are good food for thought, glad that the occupants are ok as well as the dog having driven for a number of years all over Australia
some years 100,00 ks a year not as many as some but more than the average operator but what does come to mind is drive to conditions, not sure of the circumstances of this poor injured couple, maybe that somebody clouted them. Please be careful out there good people
