Man airlifted to hospital after rooftop tent fall

Published: February 14, 2021

A man in his 50s has been flown to hospital after falling from a rooftop tent while on a camping trip.

In an incident that will send a shudder down the spine of any grey nomad who has either slept in – or thought about sleeping in – a roof-top tent, the man apparently woke during the night and slipped while climbing down a ladder.

The Morning Bulletin reports that the RACQ Capricorn Rescue was called to the campground on the edge of the beach at Charon Point, north of Rockhampton, in the early hours of this morning.

The man suffered suspected lower limb injuries, as well as minor scratches over his body.

Helicopter crew took head and neck precautions and stabilised the man’s condition before loading him onto the Rescue 300 helicopter and flying him to Rockhampton Hospital.

How many people fall off caravan steps?
Hundreds! Don’t blame the RTT unless it was faulty.
I wish him a speedy recovery. But another point is how many people fall off ladders.
It comes down being attentive.
I’m 60 and use it every week.

In early hours, going to loo? Take a empty two litre laundry detergent bottle up with you when you retire for the. Should do for at least two nocturnal urges. Then descend ladder in the morning when you can see what you are doing. Empty bottle at base of a tree or into toilet .

We had one of these for a short time. The main problem seemed to be there are no safe grab handles at the top of the ladder, which is where you need them most! I think the suppliers could easily solve this.

We travelled from Qld through NT to the top and across Gibb River Road to Broome and all the way to Esperance, from there via the inland way Kalgoorlie to Laverton to Ayers Rock and back to Cairns. Over 3 months using a rooftop tent I was 70+ and the tent posed no problem except when it was raining then they are next to useless. Care must be taken using a ladder anytime.
