National park campground set to get major upgrade

Published: June 4, 2021

The New South Wales Government is to spend around $900,000 refurbishing the Ruins campground in the Booti Booti National Park, south of Forster.

In a sign of how important the camping and caravanning sector is becoming, this is thought to be the state government’s largest ever investment project in national park visitor infrastructure.

National Parks and Wildlife Service Manning Great Lakes area manager, Steve Smith, told the Manning River Times that, while facilities at the popular campsite had been serving national park visitors well for more than 35 years, it was time to bring the campground into the 21st century.

But it is not just the growing number of grey nomads who are being considered in the upgrades.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service says that, with up to 600 visitors able to camp at the beachside campground at any one time, the new facilities would increase capacity, improve disabled access and better cater for families in an energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly way.

“We’ve begun construction on a 300m2 environmentally sustainable campground amenities building and a new camp kitchen,” Mr Smith said. “The brand-new amenities building will feature two accessible bathrooms, family and baby change facilities, instantaneous hot water, low voltage lighting and a coded electronic door access system.”

The Manning River Times says construction is expected to be completed in September 2021, weather permitting.

The campground will remain open during the construction period.

the upgrade will be nice..lets hope the amenities cleaning gets upgraded as well…no point spending all this money to have it go to ruin because of the usual NP lack of cleaning standards
