When travelling through rural Australia, grey nomads are commonly seeking a greater understanding of country life and tourism-conscious towns are increasingly giving them the opportunity to do just that.
For example, when free tours were offered at the livestock saleyards at Roma in Queensland a while ago, organisers were been blown away by their popularity.
Similarly, the introduction of sheep shearing demonstrations at Hughenden’s Flinders Discovery Centre has apparently been a huge hit with visiting grey nomads.
The North Queensland Register reports that the ‘Shearing the Stragglers’ display has inspired plenty of nostalgia in older visitors, and given them an opportunity to share memories of their own.
The paper says that the live shearing display has started new friendships, with grey nomads from all parts of Australia bonding over shearing tales before heading for the nearest pub.
Flinders Shire Council says the live shearing shows are for everyone, young and old, to see how experienced shearers ply their trade.
During each session, several sheep are expertly shorn by Warren Wall, who explains the process and types of wool, and shares stories about the characters and the events that happened in the local area during shearing’s heyday.
The live shearing demonstrations are held on Tuesdays and Thursday at 11am and 3pm at Hughenden’s Flinders Discovery Centre from June to August.
