Should we save the old thunderboxes?

Could the days of the really ‘old-fashioned’ character-filled long drop toilets be numbered? One by one it seems some of the quirky, often stinky, and nearly always scary, outdoor loos from a bygone era are being removed.

The latest casualties are in Victoria. The parks service there  has just revealed it is to replace the toilets at Blanket Bay, Aire River and Johanna Beach camp grounds with something a little bit more high-tech and a little more environmentally friendly.

The Surf Coast Times reports that the new facilities will be waterless ‘vault’ toilets which use environmentally friendly chemicals to compost the waste. The tanks will be pumped out regularly. The toilet upgrades are apparently necessary as current facilities do not meet Environmental Protection Agency requirements.

New toilets will also be built at the Cape Otway Light station car park and at Wreck Beach to meet an increasing demand for facilities. Jack Dinkgreve, ranger in charge at Apollo Bay, said the toilet upgrades continue the program of park improvement.

“The Great Otway National Park is a very popular park, and the campgrounds are increasingly busy,” he told the Surf Coast Times. “We have been making some terrific improvements at these campgrounds and the toilets will be a very welcome addition.”
