The Queensland town of Thallon is the latest to unveil its gigantic silo art masterpiece … and grey nomads are loving it.
With a population of just 450, the tiny community in the state’s southern border region needed something special to put it on the tourist map, and the 30-metre high landscape painting across four silos has certainly done that.
Brisbane street artists Travis Vinson (aka Drapl) and Joel Fergie (aka The Zookeeper) used 500 litres of paint as they finished the job just at the height of the grey nomad season.
“I reckon there are at least 50 caravans stopping each day to take photos,” Mr Fergie said. “It’s really cool, because they’d probably keep driving to the next town if there wasn’t such a beacon of light on the horizon.”
The ABC reports that the artists worked with local photographers to create an iconic Thallon image with mustering sheep and birds perched on a gum tree near the Moonie River.
“It’s hilarious, but after being up there painting a landscape scene all day we go down to the river and soak up what we’ve been painting,” Mr Fergie told the ABC. “People said ‘Oh, did you exaggerate the colours of the sky?’ But when you see a sunset out here, you’ll see just how magical they are.”
The pair, who used cherry-pickers to reach the high spots, are part of a burgeoning silo-art scene which has seen other rural towns transformed into tourist hotspots.
