The problem of campers simply dumping their rubbish in previously pristine sites some is a growing one … and requires some bold solutions.
While many campsites ask campers to take their litter away with them, others provide bins that end up not being big enough to handle the volume of cans, bottles, and packaging that are thrown away.
And an overflowing bin with random items dumped next to it can be as bad as not having a bin at all,
Campaspe Shire Council in Victoria is once again bringing out the big guns to cope with the Easter influx of visitors.
It is placing four large waste skip bins around popular camping towns in Campaspe to reduce littering and provide easy waste disposal for campers.

Mayor, Cr Rob Amos said the skips would offer a convenient way for campers to dispose of their waste, and were also environmentally friendly.
“It’s important that Council provide skip bins for campers to make waste disposal while camping easy and encourage tourists to help keep our public spaces, bushlands and waterways free of litter,” he said.
The skips will be placed at the following sites:
Cr Amos thanked visitors in advance for not leaving their waste on the ground.
“If the skips are full, campers can dispose of their bagged waste and recyclables at one of Council’s Resource Recovery Centres around the shire,” he said. “These skips are for campers’ waste only, in an effort to keep our environment clean from litter. To ensure ongoing capacity for campers, these skips are not for residential waste.”

I bet they get used by the locals to dump their rubbish and then the campers get the blame for the mattresses and other large items like fridges
Dead right.
Just like the former popular grey nomad location Greens Lake.
It’s in the Shire of Campspe, the huge skip used to be overflowing with rubbish, most of it not the campers rubbish.
A lot of campers take their rubbish with them as we do, we have seen where both locals and campers have dumped rubbish.
These large skips should be more a norm rather than during peak periods.
If the campers managed to bring their “stuff” with them, I’m sure they could fit their left over “rubbish” back into their vehicles & caravans for their journey home. We never use bins at free camping sites. We wait until we are booked into a caravan park and use the “paid-for” bins.
These are what is needed on the Bruce Hy/Way between Howard and Childers, Those bins that are there are always overflowing.
Seems we’ve got a generation of entitled campers who believe everything is someone else’s problem – including taking care of their rubbish ☹️. If you bring it in, you can take it out. Kudos to those who do and for those who believe otherwise, get a life.
