Push to get caravanners out into regional areas

Published: November 12, 2020

With unprecedented numbers of caravanners and motorhomers expected to hit the road in the coming weeks months, hopes are high that this visitor influx can help rejuvenate regional communities that have been doing it tough during the Covid-19 pandemic.

And there are many tourism authorities, local councils and others who are doing all they can to encourage grey nomads to explore all there is to explore.

The NRMA motororing organisation has just launched its ‘Sloways’ campaign asking travellers to take the ‘slow way’ on their journeys in order to support rural towns and businesses.

The ‘Sloways’ are basically a network of caravan-friendly roads that pass through 30 regional communities across New South Wales and Queensland. A new website showcases all the Sloways routes on offer, helping caravanners plan their itineraries.

A network of Sloways billboards is also appearing across coastal highways, directing caravanners to the slower roads.

Sloways will apparently be an ongoing platform with new routes and communities to be added in the coming years.

The Sloways website says Sloways will direct travellers away from fast-paced highways and through regional towns that embrace the slow life.

“By taking the Sloway, you’ll not only experience a more relaxing journey, you’ll also be supporting Aussie towns and businesses that need your help,” the site says. “Every dollar you spend makes a difference, so enjoy meandering through as many bakeries, pubs and stores as you like.”

Don’t expect any encouragement from Charters Towers council. Its policy is to close free camps wherever it can.

Damn! Now the quiet back roads will become busy.

Good initiative, although I can’t see any of the inland areas included and can’t help but think that it’s more of a self promotional campaign by NRMA.

Is this the same NRMA that charges From $42 to $52+ for powered sites in Tassie? About $25 above the average Tassie C.P. rate!

Hi,
Highways and freeways can be set as ‘avoidance’ in some GPS navigators.
Cheers
