Speed limits lowered near NT roadhouses
Slow down, you're moving too fast!

The Northern Territory Government has reduced the speed limits near roadhouses along the Stuart Highway.

Most roadhouses will have their speed limits reduced from 130 kilometres per hour to either 80 or 100 kilometres per hour.

Northern Territory Transport Minister Peter Styles told the ABC the decision was made to improve pedestrian safety.

“All the signage is being changed to indicate you are required to slow down and do that speed limit though there,” he said. “You know it’s a safety issue around about the roadhouse of vehicles entering and leaving the roadhouse … it’s about pedestrians who are accessing and crossing the road.”

Arc Vanderzalm, owner of Wycliffe Well roadhouse south of Tennant Creek, says he’s disappointed his speed limits haven’t been reduced any further.

“It’s only a matter of time till there’s another fatality here,” he said.

The ABC reports that Wycliffe Well had its speed limits reduced to 100 kilometres per hour last year, but Mr Vanderzalm was hoping for a further reduction.

The speed limit near Emerald Springs, Dunmarra, Renner Springs and Erldunda roadhouses is now 80 kilometres per hour.

It will now be 100 kilometres per hour past all other roadhouses, with the exception of Aileron Roadhouse which will stay at 130 kilometres because of its distance from the highway.

Signage is expected to be completed by January.

  1. This make’s me Laugh..
Sorry the Stuart Highway maybe 130k’s.. But I don’t imagine many nomad’s going over 100 if they are towing or even in their MH’s..

I found the Stop-motion video’s[A frame/sec] from the USofA and I was getting passed by a heap of vehicle’s on my crossing’s[Random tour]..

so basically if the speed is 100k’s do we have anything to worry about..
