A popular Tasmanian camping area has been temporarily closed down due to a fuel spill.
Devonport mayor Annette Rockliff said that the spill in the Mersey River on January 28 meant that Horsehead Creek had to be closed to camping until further notice.
Councillor Rockliff said campers were ‘encouraged to try alternative caravan parks or the camp area behind Wells at Latrobe’.
Cr Rockliff told the Advocate newspaper that the Devonport City Council would continue to assist the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) with public notifications of areas that were closed.
She confirmed that Devonport beaches remained open.
“While the council’s understanding is that waterways are not closed to the public, it is advised that swimmers and pets do not enter the water in the Mersey River until the clean-up is completed,” Cr Rockliff said. “Council will continue to assist the EPA with keeping our community in the loop as this clean-up is underway.”
