Caravan step snake gives man the fright of his life

Published: April 9, 2021

Coming across a snake while you’re out on a bushwalk on a sunny day can be startling enough, but to come across one on your caravan step in the dark is ‘next level’.

But that’s exactly what happened to one unlucky traveller at a caravan park in Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast Daily reports that the man, known only as Michael, had an almighty fright when he stepped outside of his van onto something

“I felt something under my foot and I skipped off it very quickly,” he told the paper. “My first thought was because I had a car wash sponge it must’ve fallen onto the step … I pulled the torch out and realised it was a snake!”

The incident happened during the recent spell of extremely wet weather and the snake which was more than a metre in length was searching for somewhere dry.

“There was no power too so it was pitch black – the power box had blown at the park during the storm,” said Michael. “It was the sort of fright where you just freeze.”

He said that about 10 minutes later the snake left of its own accord.

Stuart McKenzie from Snake Catchers 24/7’s told the Sunshine Coast Daily that there had been plenty of snakes on the move during the recent wet weather looking for shelter and food.

“They do this by moving around and feeling the objects around them looking for a way in to shelter, ” he said.

Takes a very smart person to know whether a snake is harmless the instant you step on it in the middle of a blackout.

I treat all those “riggly” sticks as venomous. Amazing how many ” suicide” when I face them. Must have something to do with my appearance. 🙂

We were staying at Mary Kathleen camp, sitting outside star gazing, when my husband trod on a stick that moved. It was a brown snake which then climbed up onto the van chassis and disappeared. Star gazing the next night leaning back against the Ute hubby felt something touch him on the shoulder. We turned on the torch and there was the snake slithering off the hitch onto the back step of the ute. It was in no hurry to leave but we were.
