Grey nomads batten down the hatches as storm hits

With  wild weather lashing much of the east coast, it is very much a case of secure what needs to be secured, close the van doors, get  the cards or a good book out , and ride out the storm.

Most importantly of all caravanners and motorhomers are being urged to stay off the roads, even if it means tweaking their itinerary or changing advance bookings.

New South Wales police say any motorist towing a caravan this weekend needs to slow down and exercise extreme caution.

“Motorists have been used to driving in dry conditions of late but heavy winds and rainfall brings with it a range of dangers including slippery roads and debris,” said the force’s Acting Deputy Commissioner, Geoff Mckechnie.  “With heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and hazardous surf expected this weekend, we are advising everyone to take greater care.”

A low pressure zone is making its way south from Queensland  bringing with it the chance of flooding, high winds, heavy rainfall, abnormally high tides, and exceptionally powerful surf.

Storm warning

People along the coasts of Queensland, New South Wales,  Victoria, and Tasmania have been warned to prepare for strong winds and potential flooding.

The Bureau says damaging winds from the north east, averaging 60 to 65 kilometres per hour with peak gusts in excess of 90 kilometres per hour are possible from this afternoon through to tomorrow  along much of the NSW coast.

The ABC reports that rainfall totals of 80 to 150 millimetres were likely for much of the area, with localised falls between 200 and 300 millimetres.

Queensland’s acting Premier, Jackie Trad, says people should stay off the roads as much as possible.

“If you had plans to be out on the road, perhaps today you need to think about alternatives, she said. Particularly if the roads you normally travel on are susceptible to flooding during significant weather events.”
