Struggling brothels target grey nomads to lift trade!

Published: May 28, 2015

A visit to the Goldfields town of Kalgoorlie has long been an eye-opening affair for grey nomads seeking to see all sides of life in Australia.

But the Hay Street strip – famed for its scantily clad barmaids, raucous pubs and busy brothels – is not quite as shocking as it once was. Indeed, according to a report on the ABC, it is grey nomads rather than lusty gold miners who are the brothels’ best customers.

Carmel Galvin, who has owned the Questa Casa for the past 23 years, says her brothel and others are  becoming outdated as working girls use technology to get their own business. Nowadays, it is mainly curious tourists who venture into the bright pink brothels in search of historic tours.

“Business was so bad at the brothel that we had to create an income to keep the house afloat, so tours of the house it was,” Ms Galvin told the ABC. “I’m very grateful for all of the grey nomads, they’re appreciative of the differences of how things were.”

  • Have you noticed big changes in Kalgoorlie? What are some of the other major transformations you have seen in other places over time?

A lift in trade will not be the only thing the brothels will need to lift with the grey nomad.
