Broome’s iconic Cable Beach has been re-opened after the ‘surprise’ visit of a four-metre crocodile.
The reptile stayed in the area for about seven hours over the weekend, and witnesses said it appeared to be surfing in the waves offshore.
Broome resident Sharon Scoble said she was in awe at the sight of the crocodile.
“Oh he was huge,” she told the ABC. “I mean, you see them in wildlife parks and whatever but to see one just cruising around the ocean was absolutely humbling.”
Rangers and wildlife officers closed the beach at the Western Australian beauty spot, much loved by grey nomads.
Onlookers gathered to catch a glimpse of the ‘dominant’ male crocodile as it apparently surfed and lurked in knee-deep water.
The crocodile showed no signs of aggression.
“I felt really humbled but you probably would not feel that way if you were out there on a paddle board or having a swim,” said Ms Scoble.
Parks and Wildlife officers said they believed it to be the same crocodile which was spotted in a number of locations in December. The animal will be targeted for removal to a wilderness park.
