Not cooking on gas! Recall notice issued for some Swift 500 appliances

Published: June 26, 2022

It’s been a long and stressful few days for the thousands of grey nomads who have Swift 500 series cookers installed in their caravans and motorhomes.

A safety alert was issued telling owners to urgently stop using the appliances following a serious accident in which a caravan owner suffered severe burn injuries from using their cooker while camping.

When the front left burner ignited, the user observed the flame was only on ‘simmer’ despite the control knob being on full.

The user moved the cooking pan to the rear right side burner and used the front left burner as a simmer. Soon after there was an explosion, engulfing the user in flames and causing severe burn injuries.

All owners were then advised to avoid using their Swift 500 series appliance until the extent of the issue was known.

Now, the ACCC has just revealed a recall notice has been issued for Model Numbers: 502BHSP, 502BHFW, 502DHSP, 502RHSP, 502SHFW, 502SHW, 502WBHSP, 503BHSPM, 503BHSP, 503BHSPMLG, 503BHSW, 503DHSP, 503RHSP, 503SHSPM, 503SHSW and 503BHSPN.

This affects models supplied to customers from January 1, 2019, until June 1, 2020.

It says that part of the appliance’s gas supply pipe may break or develop a hole and warns this may cause a gas leak. If the gas leaks in the presence of an ignition source this may lead to an explosion and / or fire, which may result in illness, injury or death. The ACCC further warns that if gas leaks and builds up in an enclosed area, such as a motorhome or caravan, asphyxiation may occur.

To identify affected appliances, owners should open the glass lid and check the model number on the data plate that is on the inside front left side of the lid.

While safety is, of course, of paramount importance, the issue has already had a major impact on the journeys of many travellers who have abruptly found themselves unable to use their cookers, and are potentially facing a long wait until they are able to do so again.

Travellers like Keith Cox say they are just having to adapt.

“We are going away next week for two months and have made changes and isolated the stove,” he said. “We’ll be using other cooking devices outside, until we know what to do.”

After chasing up as much information as he could, another grey nomad Tim Halls was pretty philosophical.

“It appears there is not a lot we can do but wait,” he said.

Consumers with affected appliances can contact Swift Appliance Group by calling 0412 821 912, emailing swiftrecall@outlook.com or by visiting www. swiftappliancegroup.com. au to register their details to be advised of remedial actions when they are available.

Yet, from the Swift website and inquiries made with Swift, the 8 June 2022 do not use for all 500 series remains in place until further notice. Unfortunately the ACCC recall notice which was just an invitation to register before the updated recall will be issued is being accepted as a clearance for units prior to and after the above dates.

Hi Geoff,

We apologise for any confusion or inconvenience this recall has caused.

As for being able to use your Swift 500 Series Gas Cooker, the front left burner control knob must be in the off position, and the knob must be removed and stored out of children and other users. However, once this is complete the other burners and components are safe for use according to the instruction manual provided with the appliance.

Additionally, register your details on the Swift Appliances Group Gas Cooker Recall Register and book an appointment with an approved Swift Service Agent listed on our website (https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/gas-cooker-recall-register/).

We have a list of approved Swift Service Agents available on our website (https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/gas-cooker-recall-register/), who can inspect, repair (where necessary) and deem your stove to be safe to be used for its intended purpose.

If you are not able to access an approved Swift Service Agent, please ask a registered gasfitter to contact Swift by phoning 0412 821 912 or emailing swiftrecall@outlook.com for authorisation and instructions to conduct the remedial process.

Thanks,

Other than not using our stove and sourcing a different cooking method. The biggest impact is the misinformation contributed by ill informed panicky people on social media. And no real advice via main stream media such as press, tv and radio. Most people who are affected seem philosophical enough to simply “suck it up” but there are those who simply want to whinge loud and long.

Hi Warren Barr,

A remedial process is now available for the Swift 500 Series Gas Cookers manufactured between 1 January 2019 – 31 May 2020 (inclusive).

– If you think your cooker may be affected, check the manufacturing date by referring to the data plate located on the cooker lid.
– If it is included in the product safety recall, STOP using your appliance and ensure that the front left burner control knob is in the off position, the knob has been removed and is stored out of children and other users.
– If you are intending to travel off-road, install a gas leak detection device inside the cupboard located under the Gas Cooker unit.
– Register your details on the Swift Appliances Group Gas Cooker Recall Register. (https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/gas-cooker-recall-register/)
– Contact an authorised person, licensed plumber, or gas fitter from the list of Swift Service Agents on the Swift Appliance Group Website (https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/gas-cooker-recall-register/), to book an appointment

Same same, advice is misleading. We have model but outside of dates. Are model AND dates to be read together? Does this mean we are ok if outside dates yet model is stated as affected? Is it a manufacture date?

  1. I to have never been advised of an “issue” by either the Caravan Manufacture or Dealership – (only via social medial “informed” posts or via Hearsay…) As yet, the Media have not even picked up on the issue!
  2. Ref ACCC Website (productsafety.com etc) there are NO published PRODUCT bans, either INTERIM or PERMANENT relating to any recent Swift Oven Appliance.
  3. ACCC, on the 24th June 2022, issued a recall notice (Version 1 22nd June 2022) which affects/applies to those ovens with a Date stamp of 1st Jan 2019 to 1st Jun 2020 – There is no implied or stated ban or recall on any other Ovens outside of these Dates from the ACCC within the Recall Document (at this point in time).
  4. Normal document version control by Date would indicate that this publication supersedes all previous advice or information ( As will any further related ACCC updates.)

Just my thoughts and interpretation of what’s transpired to date

What a confusing and totally unacceptable situation this is by Swift. They have not provided adequate information about this significant issue and their communication with their customers (Caravan owners) is non existent. Their handling of the recall has been exceptionally poor and owners of Swift stoves are left hanging without knowing what is going on. It is not good enough and they should be posting daily updates on their website to keep everyone informed.

We took delivery of our new van beginning of June and 2 days after picking it up we got an email to say don’t use the swift oven! Why are manufacturers still putting the ovens in (and being allowed to)….and selling them, if they are aware of the problem? As everyone has…a lot of money was spent to buy our new caravan, but we can’t even fully use it!!
We also registered with Swift as it is a recall model, and as there was so much confusion around it. They emailed back to say under no circumstances use it with gas, Electric hob to be used only until further notice, even though it was outside build dates published.

I had and email from Swift today regarding the stove. It was in response to an email I sent on the 8th June and today requested a reply to that first email.
It states they are having a meeting today, I presume with the relevant authorities, which states to keep an eye on the website for the outcome of that meeting. Hopefully some clarification of this issue.

Mark at Riverside 9/7/2022
Whilst seeking some clarification on the Swift 500 recall which to date has been handled extremely poorly I discovered a recall on a ACCC site dated 2015 for Swift 500 cooktops (PRA number2015/14707) so the information on that recall is as follows:
What are the defects? The caravan gas cooker has not been installed with adequate support in the cavity in accordance with AS/NZS5601 in order to prevent movement.
What are the hazards?Excess movement or vibration may cause the cookers fitting lines to leak, posing a potential risk of explosion or fire.
So this begs the question just how long has this recall been around as the defect appears not to be a recent development.
So where does the defect notice dates come from i.e.
This affects models supplied to customers from January 1, 2019, until June 1, 2020.
I’m event more confused now as to exactly what we need to do as the issue appears have been around for a considerable period and I see the only course of action is to replace all Swift 500 cooktops and Ovens with an alternative brand so we can confidently use our Vans.

Hi Sandie Skinner,

We apologise for any confusion or inconvenience this recall has caused.

As for being able to use your Swift 500 Series Gas Cooker, the front left burner control knob must be in the off position, and the knob must be removed and stored out of children and other users. However, once this is complete the other burners and components are safe for use according to the instruction manual provided with the appliance.

We have a list of approved Swift Service Agents available on our website (https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/gas-cooker-recall-register/), who can inspect, repair (where necessary) and deem your stove to be safe to be used for its intended purpose.

Additionally, register your details on the Swift Appliances Group Gas Cooker Recall Register(https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/gas-cooker-recall-register/).

The explosion occurred in a 2014 model van ,we have a 2014 model van with a swift gas stove..oures had a gas leak approx 3 years ago and was found to be because the gas line was installed with no support causing a stress fracture of the pipe where the pipe is flared and attached to the stove …the gas line flexed so much the flexing cracked the pipe releasing gas into the van…we were lucky .

Please check if yours is installed the same way…

If this was a car fault company calls them to be fixed, over a month now and not going forward. Surely by now we should be able to get our stove checked by a gas plumber and charged to Swift.

We bought a Classic caravan back in 2018. The Swift Series 500 cooker in the van is dated 4 November 2016, however it has several Model No’s which include the above mentioned. The cooker is not being used and I have turned the gas off. it is a little confusing give the dates January 1, 2019, until June 1, 2020 FOR affected stoves and mine is dated 2016?
Hopefully the manufacturer makes good and either repairs the stoves for all concerned, or replaces the stoves with new ones, covering all associated costs.

Yes, it is about time the manufacturer gave us a definitive answer. I have tried to ring – sent numerous emails with photos and to date zero response. Next thing we will hear is a notice that they have gone into administration to avoid their responsibilities.

Reply to  George Noyes

George, our 2013 van has a swift model. It caused problems in may last year 2021, when flames shot up on side of stove a foot high. I contacted swift and explained that an aluminium pipe leading from the oven had snapped off at the main line where the nut is done up at the top. Without any hint of an going problem, they asked me the serial number and then supplied me with two copper fittings, one to replace the broken one and the other to replace the pipe in the griller. This company covered all costs and postage. I just had to get a licensed plumber to fit. The copper pipes are much stronger than the aluminium ones installed

George, We have a 2013 Ian Grant Tourer, manufactured by ‘Creative’, (who went out of business later that year). It is an off road caravan and we did a lot of “off roading” by taking the van down roads like the Gibb River Road (Very rough) that very first year. In 2017 we were in Esperance WA when my wife went to use the oven for the very first time and found it would not light. Yours truly was called and also found that I could not light the oven so whilst kneeling on the floor with the oven door resting on my chest I lit a burner on the top of the stove (for the purpose of seeing if gas was coming to the stove) with an immediate explosion resulting. The explosion came from under the oven which blew the floor cupboard door open and the flame onto my chest area. Fortunately the fact the flame was kept from going upwards by the open oven door and the fact I was wearing a heavy woollen pullover, I did not suffer any physical injury. My pullover was singed but not severely damaged. The explosion caused superficial damage to cupboards and wall. The next morning I rang Swift and the gentlemen who answered the telephone seemed to immediately know what the problem was and forwarded free of charge to Kalgoorlie a new brass and copper control and pipe assembly with advice to get a gas fitter to fit it. No gas fitter/plumbers in Kalgoorlie would come near a caravan but a pure chance of one doing a job in a tiny little outback caravan park I was able to find out what had happened. The aluminium pipe from the control knows to the oven burner had broken off (vibration) and the gas gathered underneath the oven with some in the cavity between the oven and the fridge . Our insurance Company was notified immediately and on our return to Melbourne some two months later the caravan was taken to a reputable repairer to be fixed. On telling the man behind the counter what had happened he immediately pointed out a recall notice on his office wall for these stoves. It had been in existence for some time but neither the manufacturer nor the supplier of the van contacted us about a problem with these ovens. Some $20+ thousand later the van was repaired and we now have a new oven which now can’t use because it is one of model numbers mentioned above. I tell this detailed story for the benefit of others who may be wondering what can happen. It seems to me there was an abrogation of responsibility back then as there is now by the Manufacturers, Swift and Dealers. IF YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHECK THE PIPE FROM THE CONTROL KNOBS TO THE OVEN BURNER AND IT IS ALUMINIUM, THEN BE CAUTIOUS.
