Amidst mounting confusion and angst over the recall of some Swift caravan cookers, the company has issued new information to customers.
On its website, Swift Appliances has the following advice for all travellers who have Swift 500 series cookers manufactured before June 1, 2020.
“Remove the control knob by grasping the edges and pulling the knob towards you,” it says. “Store it in a safe place away from children or other users.”
Swift Appliances says a defect means ‘a part of the gas supply pipe may break or develop a hole’. It warns this may cause a gas leak.
“If the gas leaks in the presence of an ignition source this may lead to an explosion and/or fire which may result in serious illness, injury or death,” the company says on its website. “The defect has caused incidents that have caused serious injuries and burns.”

It says that, if gas leaks and builds up in an enclosed area, such as a motorhome or caravan, asphyxiation may occur.
Swift Appliances says that anyone who suspects their appliance may be one of those affected should open the glass lid and check the model number on the data plate that is on the inside front left side of the lid.
The Swift Appliance Group 500 Series Cooker/Grill and Cooktops affected by the previously announced safety recall are: 502BHSP, 502BHFW, 502DHSP, 502RHSP, 502SHFW, 502SHW, 502WBHSP, 503BHSPM, 503BHSP, 503BHSPMLG, 503BHSW, 503DHSP, 503RHSP, 503SHSPM, 503SHSW and 503BHSPN.
If the appliance is one of those affected, the company says consumers should immediately turn off the appliance and not operate it on gas.
While grey nomads understand that safety should always be the top priority, many have been intensely frustrated by what they say is a lack of clear information from Swift.
The story has now been picked up by Channel 9’s A Current Affair. In response to a series of questions from the programme, Swift Appliances, issued a media statement.
It stated that the ‘defect is confined to the 500 Series Gas Cookers produced and supplied between 01 January 2019 and 01 June 2020’.
However, it says 500 Series Gas Cookers manufactured and supplied before 01 January 2019 ‘are currently included in the recall while Swift gathers further evidence’.
The company says that all Swift 500 series cookers manufactured on or after June 1, 2020, ‘can continue to be used without restrictions’.
In its statement to a Current Affair, Swift Appliances says it has instigated a nationwide testing program to identify the exact fault in the appliance.
“We have worked with the national Gas Testing Regulator and all State regulators to determine which cookers are safe for ordinary use, which cookers must not be used while Swift gathers more information, and which cookers must not be used except for the electrical elements while Swift gathers more information,” it says. “We have contacted caravan and RV manufacturers directly about the recall.”

Tim and Heather Halls are among the many grey nomads who have had to adapt to a new cooking reality. This is what it looks like for them. PIC: Tim Halls
It says it hopes to have more clarity around the repair timeline when it has completed its tests and reported back to the State Regulators with the results. Swift says it will have updated notices on its website by July 20.
And in response to complaints about its lack of communication with consumers, Swift Appliances told a Current Affair it was doing what it could.
“We have deployed more internal resources to our customer communication and support processes,” it said. “Many customers have appreciated this. Some haven’t, which we understand, given the concerns that they would understandably have. We share those concerns and have acted upon them.”
However, grey nomads like Kevin Wilson remain unimpressed.
“A poor effort all round as far as I’m concerned!” he said.
And he is still anxiously waiting for more news so he can belatedly hitch up and head north as planned.
“Van parked at home while we wait in the freezing cold for a solution,” he said. “I’m cutting much more firewood with a chainsaw than I expected to be at my age!”
For grey nomads who are out on the road with a cooker they can’t use, a variety of innovative cooking solutions have had to be deployed. For many, devices like microwaves, slow cookers, air fryers, and portable barbecues are getting a much harder workout than usual. And others are relying on travelling fiends who do not have affected cookers to come to their culinary aid.
It’s not ideal and they, and all others with affected cookers, will be eagerly awaiting the next statement from Swift Appliances.
It has been very frustrating to find out when on holidays that you could not use the cooker. And only finding out through Facebook. We have managed, we are not big on BBQ meals so many one pot dinners have been made. And using our small gas burner stove outside when weather permits. I’m still worried about using the other two burners. May hold off for now.

It’s just annoying. Having an appliance that you can’t use is extremely frustrating particularly when the inside oven and hot plates are used more often in winter. The next problem is going to be that there are so many units fitted on earlier vans it is going to take years to get them all checked as I’m guessing it will have to be one of swifts limited authorised agents.
Steve you are right. If was a car problem it’s all over media and the recalls are quick, same as food recalls. If only Swift gave us the ok to get them checked at THEIR expense. Also saying to use one of the burners is ok is a bit iffy. Not using ours at all just freeze boiling kettle in morning outside
Hi Steve
We apologise for the trouble and confusion surrounding this recall.
We now have a remedial process outlined on our website (https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/), but the most important thing is to please ensure that the front left burner control knob is in the off position, and you have removed the knob and stored it out of children and other users. Once this process is complete the other burners and components are safe for use according to the instruction manual provided with the appliance. Additionally, you can register your details on the Swift Appliances Group Gas Cooker Recall Register.
Thanks, Sally Swift
Just give us the go ahead to get gas professionals to get checked at Swift expense. Car recalls are print as food recalls. This is a huge inconvenience to us al.
I was told that if they found a problem with our cooker then a Swift service agent would have to install the new whatever. Well just in case I tried to find someone in our area, but there is no one. Good luck with that.
Hi D. Canala,
We apologise for the inconvenience.
Please register your details on the Swift Appliances Group Gas Cooker Recall Register and book an appointment with an approved Swift Service Agent listed on our website (https://swiftappliancegroup.com.au/gas-cooker-recall-register/) to have your cooker checked.
Thanks, Sally Swift
Just spoke with a service agent for Swift in Sandgate Queensland who advised that they have not been advised of any issue with 500 series manufactured prior to 1/1/2019 and knows nothing about any remedial action for earlier models being communicated to them by Swift. Agent claimed that to their knowledge the recall only affected models manufactured between 1/1/2019 and 1/6/2020. Talk about mass confusion, Swift are not even keeping their service agents informed. I have not found anywhere other than the Current Affair site relating to Swift supplying an updated tube cost free to consumers with only service labour costs being imposed for owners of 500 series manufactured prior to 1/1/2019. The service agent certainly knows nothing about it.
Hi Flipper,
We apologise for the confusion.
A remedial process is now available for the Swift 500 Series Gas Cookers manufactured between 1 January 2019 – 31 May 2020 (inclusive).

Date: 21 July @ 8:45am.
The anticipated update from Swift Appliance Group on the 20th July has not happened. A check on their website still shows the “Safety Notice” released last Saturday 16 July.
Even after registering on their Recall Register, I did not receive any notification that my details had been received and recorded. I would expect some acknowledgement and a Reference No. or the like for later follow up and rectification purposes.
Quite poor customer relations and inaction from Swift.
Update by the poster: 22 July 2022.
An updated “Safety Notice” has been posted by Swift on their website Home page sometime late on 21st or early today. However, this notice still shows a date of 16th July.
The news is still no better for the majority of owners, however they offer handy hints on how to use the stove properly.
Shows a lack of thoroughness and accuracy in handling a very important issue concerning so many.
Hi all,
The most frustrating thing with all of this is the lack of contact Swift provide, I have made numerous attempts by both E mail and the product re call site, no reply for over a month. This is just rude and showing a complete disregard to all of us,
Ted R

So is the company going to reimburse us for loss of a cooker? We have an affected model and just taking off the knob is not the answer. Can’t wait to hear
We were hoping to sell our van but unable to get a Gas Certificate unless we disconnect our Swift Appliance. Imagine how the value of our caravan will be affected without an operating stove! Extremely frustrating.

no additional information .Cooker or company should be examined for false supply of goods. Why is it taking months to work on a solution except to drive people away from repairs thus avoiding any costs.

Here we are the 9th of September and still waiting on a remedy to our Swift Gas cook tops.
How do they get away with keeping us hanging and basically having Caravans that are not fit for purpose.
My patience is starting to wear out.
