Vehicle towing caravan slides across road and crashes into guard rail

Published: April 24, 2023

A vehicle towing a caravan has been involved in a frightening accident in north Queensland’s Tablelands region.

The Cairns Post reports police saying the incident happened early yesterday afternoon when the vehicle towing a caravan slid across the road and crashed into the guard rail on the Gillies Range Rd at Gadgarra, near the Heales Lockout

A Queensland Police spokesman said that everyone appeared safe after the crash, which blocked the road in all directions and caused significant traffic disruption.

The Cairns Post reports that the Gillies Range Road is notorious for closures and traffic delays due to fallen trees and vehicle crashes.

On Saturday, there was another nasty accident involving travellers in north Queensland, but a couple of hours further south.

The Cairns Post reports that a campervan crashed and rolled three times on Tully Mission Beach Road near Merryburn.

Two people reportedly suffered minor injuries and were transported to Tully Hospital.

Following the incident, a Queensland Police Service spokesperson urged all drivers to take extra care and allow for additional travel time when on the road.

I don’t know why caravans are allowed on the Gillies. Worst road in Australia. A friend of ours crashed their van coming down the Gillies many years ago and we won’t use that road even in our vehicle.

Its a great motorcycle road, Caravans should be banned on it.

“Caravans should be banned”. What a load of rubbish.
The Gillies Range certainly is an “interesting” road that I have travelled at ridiculous speeds that you probably wouldn’t believe, but I also have travelled both ways it in my 6800kg GCM car and van without any problems.
“Caravans should be banned”. Spare me’
If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen”.
Or learn to drive.

Your obviously not a local. It doesn’t come down to skill . You get a bit of water or oil on that road and it’s deadly. You don’t live in fnq

I’m a local. I repeatedly tell people the gillies range rd is not suitable for caravans. Palmerston highway only ! Kuranda rd I’ve seen caravans hit in the back side on tight corners. I’m over the smart comments “ I towed my caravan up or down that road. Well you were lucky that’s all .
