A grey nomad couple were among the three people killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway just north of Bowen.

A fuel tanker carrying 11,000 litres of diesel collided with a ute and a car towing a caravan on Tuesday afternoon. 9News reports that the tanker was travelling north when it rolled, hitting a ute and landing on a four-wheel drive towing a caravan at the Collinsvale turn-off.

A man and a woman aged in their 70s, who were travelling in the car towing a caravan died at the scene. Mackay’s Daily Mercury reports they were travelling from interstate. A spokeswoman for Queensland Police told 9News they were still seeking family members of the elderly couple.

The driver and sole occupant of one of the cars, a 34-year-old Bowen man, died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a 38-year-old man, was not physically injured during the crash. He was taken for mandatory drug testing. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

The tragedy closed the Bruce Highway from 2.20pm on Tuesday until just after 6am on Wednesday.

The Daily Mercury reports that some local good Samaritans were seen offering warm beverages and snacks to motorists stuck in the gridlock.

“It’s heartwarming to know there are still people around who truly care about others,” one woman said.
