Tasmania is set to open its borders to Victoria on November 27, days earlier than originally planned.
The announcement follows Victoria’s 12-day streak of zero new coronavirus cases.
Tasmania had originally planned to scrap border restrictions with Victoria on December 1.
Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said the revised plans will be dependent on Victoria’s coronavirus cases remaining low.
“I think it would be fair to say that in terms of the steps that have been taken in Victoria, and without wanting to put the mocker on them, it has worked,” Mr Gutwein said.
Tasmania has already opened its borders to all other Australian states and territories.
Tasmania originally shut its borders on March 21 when all non-essential travellers arriving in the island state were told they would be required to self-isolate for 14 days.
The opening of the Tasmanian border to all Australians without quarantine requirements is another big step towards the country finally becoming internal-border free once again … a development which would come as a huge relief to grey nomads.
Yesterday, South Australia’s Police Commissioner and State Coordinator, Grant Stevens, said Victoria’s ‘excellent’ progress in tackling Covid-19 had put SA’s Transition Committee in a position to make “some positive decisions on Friday”.
