The sunshine state? Tassie comes in from the cold

Published: March 2, 2016

It may have a reputation for cold weather but it seems that times – or at least temperatures – they are a’changing in Tasmania.

According to new data, the Apple Isle has just enjoyed its warmest summer since records began, with the mean temperature almost two degrees hotter than average.

There was also little rain over summer after the state’s driest ever spring season.

“The state-wide average temperature was about 1.8 degrees warmer than normal for summer,” said Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Ian Barnes-Keoghan. “One of the things that seems to be affecting our weather at the moment is very warm waters, especially along the east coast.”

So, does this mean that grey nomads needn’t bring warm clothing the next time they board the Spirit of Tasmania heading south?

“We did have a couple of cold fronts and that was when there was snow,” cautioned Mr Barnes-Keoghan. “But it wasn’t as common as past seasons!”

Travellers should also note that nothing lasts forever.
