The GNT lifts lid on ‘real’ meaning of highway waves

Published: May 10, 2013

Yipppeeeee! It’s out! Issue 45 of the ever-topical Grey Nomad Times is here!

In the latest fun-filled edition, we explore the meaning of that most iconic of grey nomad greetings … the Outback highway wave. We also meet a pair of veteran travellers who want to go around in circles forever; we suck up some stagnant water with Jezza; visit one of Victoria’s greatest national parks; and Heidi gives some secret smokers the house-sitting heave-ho.

We’ve also got our usual avalanche of lively letters, reveal our Outback loo progress poll results, and we’re flooded with entries for our floating van caption contest. We ask the difficult – and intriguing – questions in our head-scratching quiz; and try to find out whether the grey nomad era is over.

We also celebrate as our Facebook fan base surges past 800 … and urge you to ‘Like’ us and help us to hit the magical 1,000 mark. Enjoy!

I conducted a small survey of my own by waving to every oncoming van or camper whilst towing the van, by far the majority waved back mostly a couple of fingers off the steering wheel.
Then on same stretch of highway without the van I waved to every oncoming van and only got 1 wave back I think this confirms my thoughts that we are happy to acknowledge those we know have common interest and don’t worry about the rest
