School holiday are here … and so are van park thieves

Published: October 1, 2019

With the school holidays in full swing and caravan parks and camping grounds filling up, thieves are once again on the prowl in search of easy pickings.

In the Tweed area of northern New South Wales, police have responded to a series of incidents by issuing an urgent warning to travellers.

Tweed Byron Police took to social media to warn residents and tourists to keep their eyes peeled for offenders.

“Stealing from caravan parks is on the rise during school holiday time,” the statement read. “Tweed Byron Police would like to warn holidaymakers and residents to be more vigilant than usual when it comes to security of their personal belongings while camping this school holidays.”

The Daily Examiner newspaper reports that the perpetrators have been described as ‘being small in stature, wearing hoodies and hats to conceal their identities’.

Police have been working closely with the management of caravan parks in the region to stamp out the thefts. Officers will ramp up patrols of caravan parks and surrounding areas.

“The offenders have been targeting caravan parks from Tweed Heads to Pottsville stealing pushbikes, iPads, Televisions, phones and other various electronic items,” the police statement read. “The offenders are using bolt cutters to cut cables and locks from bikes secured to caravans and cars.”

Thefts & vandalism spike everywhere during school holidays. Not hard to work out who are the culprits. Kids, unsupervised, parents at work or at the club, depending on the culture of the parent. Been happening for a long time.

Beth, if you are travelling on the cheap and plan on free camping invest $50.00 and buy the latest Camps Australia book from any newsagent or one of the caravan and camping shops around the country. Enjoy your travels and travel safely.

Whatever else you do don’t go in Summer! That is December, January,
February , March! It is too bloody HOT! Also buy some fly nets. The flies are pretty bad and will drive you insane. Do not pick up hitch hikers! These roads are vast and very lonely. Always use proper camp grounds. Good luck!

When I first glanced at the head lines and I quote.
“” School holiday are here … and so are van park thieves””
My immediate thoughts were that the article would be about how the C.Park owners are hiking up prices for the school holidays.
But, however it is an educational information re the security and safety in C.Parks.
We have never and hopefully will never experience the theft and danger of van travel.

Not only kids or juveniles “hitting” caravan parks either. We live in a peaceful and quiet community on the Fraser Coast and last Sunday a camper trailer was hitched up to a Landcruiser and towed away from a residents front yard at mid day, and driving past the community hall where it was sighted on security cameras. LOVE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

Hey Beth…from Holland.
Go to a newsagent or bookshop and buy a “Camps Australia” book.
It will give you all the info you will need for travel. I think edition 10 is now available. Good luck and safe travels..!

Hi Beth from Holland
Best time is now. Take plenty of time. stay a week or more at each place. Do not rush to meet any deadline. We love Tathra on the South Coast of NSW just above Eden. Tathra Beachside is Frankie J Holden’s Park right on the Beach.

We have had a number of small items pinched, the latest being beach Towels.

We try to avoid the coastal areas during school holidays mostly due the crowds but also think it safer.

I’ve said this many times in prior posts. The main problem is we have the laws in place but the left leaning Judges fail to enforce the law.
