The scourge of thefts from caravan parks continues to cause grief to grey nomads and other travellers across the country.
In the most recent spate of criminal activity, a range of electronic goods and cash has been stolen from under awnings at a caravan park in Portland, Victoria.
Detective Senior Constable Jarrod Anderson, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, told the Standard newspaper that the offenders stole items from the Claremont Caravan Park on Australia Day.
“They’ve pretty much knocked off anything that was not bolted down,” he said. “Cash was removed from wallets, mobile phones stolen as well as other electronics … there were multiple victims.”
In a completely separate incident, two men and a boy were have been arrested after five cars were broken into at the Coffin Bay Caravan Park in South Australia. The original incidents took place at the beginning of the month. After receiving reports of a man breaking into cars, police quickly arrested a 28-year-old man and charged him with five counts of theft and illegal interference.
Following an investigation, police attended a home in Port Lincoln where they also arrested an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy. They were also charged with five counts of theft and illegal interference.
The victims’ property was recovered at the scene and returned to the victims.
The trio will all appear in the Port Lincoln Magistrates Court on Thursday, February 15.
we dont leave anything worth pinching in the annexe . just my turbo oven and gas cooker which are both cheap to replace .
Our annexe is completely open so we rarely leave anything of value outside the locked caravan. Old chairs and table and washing on the line is the extent of our potential loss. In five months of travelling, we have not been victims of theft at all (touch wood).
Unfortunately, that is the way of the world and unattended annexes are a big temptation to the light fingered. We have never lost anything, but do put valuables into the van if unattended.
My husband looked out the window at the Jetty Caravan Park, Normanville, one morning and asked what had I done with the large, very heavy towbar from the back of the Jeep overnight! Needless to say thieves had stolen it in the middle of the night without making a sound or setting off the car alarm. Now everything on the car and under the awning is locked down. What rotters there are out there…..
