“There’s too much traffic … let’s ban caravans!”

Grey nomad caravans face daytime road ban

It is well known that time-stressed motorists and truckies can get ‘mildly’ impatient with relaxed grey nomads on our highways and byways … but few would call for caravans to be banned in order to get traffic moving more quickly.

But that’s exactly what’s happening in the UK where the boss of a major trucking firm is leading calls for legislation to make it illegal for caravans to be on the road during the summer daytime.

John Gregory, who runs Gregory Distribution, in south west England says caravans cause accidents, delay his drivers, and lose him money.

During six weeks of the summer, Mr Gregory wants caravans on the road only between 6pm and 6am.

Mr Gregory called on the UK’s Department for Transport to step in to resolve the traffic snarl-up situation.

“You either put up with the problem or you try and find a solution,” he told the BBC. “I mean this is just an idea, I’m not necessarily saying it’s the only idea, but it’s just an idea.”

The Department for Transport says there are no plans to limit the access of any type of vehicle on British roads.

  • Could this sort of innovative thinking ease traffic congestion issues on some of our busier stretches of road? Should there be times of day where Australia’s roads are ‘caravans and motorhomes only’? Comment below.

What a stupid idea, roads are congested because they cannot cope with the increased traffic. Some of Australia’s highways are little more than goat tracks. Just how much of our fuel taxes is actually spent on roads.

what planet does that guy live on ,he needs to get over it.whilst there are some caravans that do not seem to be able to travel at the speed limit mostly they travel at the signposted speed or pull over now and then, there are ar more trucks/ trailers and other loads that clog our roads.

We always pull over to let truck pass.

Maybe the trucks should be made to use the roads between 6pm and 6am just like in the centre of some cities happens already.

Main problem in England is that the dam roads are so damn narrow …..

Traffic one side, caravans other side. For the sake of safety slow the big trucks. Let everyone enjoy the road. Those hurry on drivers should remember, the minute they safe could be their last.

Better to ban trucks..make rail the main delivery method.

I wonder what would happen if car drivers suggested banning trucks so they would not be stuck behind them!
