A grey nomad couple were lucky to be able to walk away after their car rolled while towing a caravan in country Victoria.
The couple in their 50s were travelling to Sorrento from Walhalla with three other couples and their caravans when the accident happened yesterday morning.
Police said a woman in her 50s from Canberra suffered cuts to her face and was taken to Latrobe Regional Hospital in a stable condition.
“There’s a fair bit of damage to the four-wheel-drive which has been put on its side,” Baw Baw Highway Patrol Sergeant Andrew Milbourne told the LaTrobe Valley Express. “The caravan has clipped the Armco railing and come around and the hitch has broken away from the van.”
The incident happened about on the Moe-Rawson Road about 15 kilometres north of Moe on a ‘notorious bend’ near Thalloo Road where multiple collisions have occurred in the past two years.
“We had some people come here on the scene first of all and they were able to break the windscreen and get them out, thankfully,” said Sergeant Milbourne. “In this case we were very lucky that the driver and passenger were able to walk away.”
Police are warning motorists that, whether they know the area or not, they need to drive with due care.
“You’ve got a wet surface at the moment and that makes driving on these roads, particularly if you don’t know them, extremely hazardous,” Sergeant Milbourne said. “There’s been a few of them coming through, the grey nomad scenario, and people have been enjoying the beautiful country side here but unfortunately they’ll remember this holiday for a bit longer than they normally would.”
The LaTrobe Valley Express reports that the cause of the collision is yet to be confirmed at this stage, but police believe recent rainfall may have contributed to poor road conditions.

Because the sign on the side of the says 100, you don’t have to drive at that speed. I tow a caravan at 90 when conditions are good, and if they are not good. Don’t worry about the clowns behind you trying to push you along.
Sound advice Rob – as long as you’re also be considerate and pulling over regularly to let banked up traffic go?
How many times do you see these clowns pulling two bedroom apertments on wheels g o flying past at 110km. Slow down dosent mean you are a tough guy. MEANS YOU ARE A FOOL.
I’m a little confused by Thomas’ comments. What does “Slow down doesn’t mean you’re a tough guy. Means you’re a fool; mean in this context?”
I hope he means that even tough guys slowi down & that driving FAST is foolish when towing, especially in wet conditions with a large van……
Only the driver and those attending will know what caused this accident but yes drive to the conditions which usually means slow down
Actually road sign was 80km & vehicle was travelling under this speed, caravan tyres didn’t grip and van just slid out, others in group had also noticed the bend was bad, was advised after accident that there were numerous accidents on this bend but local council had failed to do anything about it, maybe they actually need to reduce the speed limit further.
