fatal five warning for caravans

An 81-year-old caravanner has been issued with a traffic infringement notice following a serious accident on the Burnett Highway last week.

Police say the male driver was in a 4WD towing a caravan when he lost control of the vehicle, colliding with an embankment, causing significant damage to his vehicle and caravan.

“The driver and his female passenger suffered very minor injuries,” Nanango Constable Michael Moffatt told the South Burnett Times. “Police wish to thank motorists for their patience while the crash was managed and cleared.”

The accident happened approximately 8km north of Nanango at around 11am on September 29.

Police have once again urged grey nomads – and all motorists – to remember the Fatal Five when driving. These are:

  • Fatigue
  • Drink and drug driving
  • Speeding
  • Failure to wear a seatbelt
  • Distraction and inattention

There have been a spate of caravan crashes and rollovers in recent weeks. The most recent came just a day after the accident on the Burnett Highway when a caravan and tow vehicle exploded in an accident on the Bruce Highway.

I hope he wasn’t given his ticket as happened to a friend of mine.
Upside down in a ditch, trapped in vehicle, badly injured but still conscious, waiting for the rescue teams to arrive. The cop who was first on the scene got down in the ditch and handed him the ticket through the window.

This sounds like one of those ‘urban myths’ that become entrenched as fact. You are saying that a badly injured man was given a ticket by this policeman and it never made news in Australia? If this actually happened the policeman was derelict in his duty and would surely have been reprimanded

We never seem to get to know why the accidents happen. How can we take extra care from their crash experiences if no one ever tells us the cause. I for one would love to know.

I’m with you lorraine. The findings are never published so we can get a better understanding of what went wrong.

I think it is getting to the time when training for permits/licensing needs to be seriously looked at. It needs to cover all the basics: weight, reversing etc.
