Caravanners survive horror crash with triple road train

Published: August 2, 2021

A car towing a caravan has been involved in a horror collision with a triple road train on the Stuart Highway.

Miraculously, there were no serious injuries in the crash, which occurred yesterday morning 11 kilometres north of the Erldunda Roadhouse in the Northern Territory.

It is understood there were two adults and two children in the car towing a caravan, and there was at least one driver of the road train.

Southern Watch Commander Jared Porch told the NT News it was a frightening incident.

“Thankfully all occupants were able to self extricate from the vehicles with no serious injuries reported,” he said. “We thank members of the public who were involved who were patient with police directions as the road was blocked for some time due to debris and the road train.”

There is no indication yet as to the cause of the collision. Investigations will continue.

No they are Professionals, More likely Caravans make them nervous, considering the how unprodictable they are.

Like all drivers, there are good and bad, I’ve seen terrible and dangerous truck drivers and some very average caravanners, how anyone can comment on who might have caused it is ignorant.

No, they know what they are doing. As long as caravans keep to their side of the road and give them room there are no problems.

I think we Caravaners should have a test displayed on our licence saying we are capable of towing a van,, HR and semi,s do so why shouldn’t we. Towing a van is a bit different to towing a box trailer. But we encountered a semi double passing us and other people on a double white lines on a hill with a corner coming up. We all hit the brakes too let him in, wow that was close, but caravaners do some dangerous driving too.safe travelling EVERYBODY.

Just for reference information, I travel to Tennant Creek frequently. Yesterday 2/8/21, I was returning from Tennant. I passed at least 80 caravans in the 500 km journey. While most do the right thing, Victorians I notice, travel in convoys with very little distance between them (Perhaps they are afraid of getting lost!). At one point I had to pass 6 vans because there was no gap. Coupled with the fact that I am travelling at 130 and most were doing about 80-90, makes for danger. Point being, I suggest you all leave at least 500 metres between you. Otherwise you create a very dangerous situation for us all, you included.

I would rather be sharing the road with a heavy vehicle than most light vehicles, except for mud carters

Just like to make the point , the truck drivers in the west are pure gentlemen compared to the majority on the Bruce Highway. We recently returned home from the west after eight months away. While leaving Cloncurry there was a bit of UHF conversation. My wife looked at me and said: Yes, We are definitely back in Queensland!
