Grey nomads are being warned to take extreme care with fire as the Australian winter draws to a close and the temperatures rise. In western Queensland, a fire weather warning is in place for parts of the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego. It comes as thousands of people travel through the region for this weekend’s Birdsville Races.
“We’ve got the grey nomads and the travellers going through at the moment – we’re asking them to take extreme caution,” said Shane Brumby from the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service. “Make sure that if they have got a camp fire that it is completely extinguished when they leave it in the morning and make sure that the embers are cold and out.”
Mr Brumby told the ABC that several hazard reduction burns have jumped containment lines in the past few weeks.
“It’s nowhere near as severe as last week’s weather pattern but we do expect some fairly strong winds in front of this system as it comes through,” he said. “I just urge landholders to take extreme precaution and if they can hold off doing any hazard reduction a day or so, until this system passes again, that would be much appreciated.”
