Man has miracle escape after huge tree falls on his caravan

Published: August 28, 2024

A man has had a lucky escape after a huge tree fell on his caravan as he lay in bed.

The tree toppled at Shawlands Caravan Park in Dandenong South as wild winds lashed Melbourne yesterday afternoon.

The tree’s roots were ripped out of the ground and the fallen tree trapped the man inside his caravan.

CFA and FRV firefighters, including a specialist rescue team, were called to lift the tree from the caravan.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson told the Herald Sun that the organisation, the Country Fire Authority, and a ‘specialist rescue team’ worked together to remove the tree.

“The tree was removed by crane, which allowed paramedics to access the patient,” they said. “The patient was transported to hospital.”

The man is now said to be in a stable condition.

Emergency Victoria had issued a severe Weather Warning for damaging winds, gusting up to 100km/h in parts of Melbourne.

Tasmania was also hit by massive winds, which led to tracks in Freycinet National Park, including Mt Freycinet and Graham track, Mt Amos track and Cape Tourville, being closed.

Ferry services to Bruny Island were also delayed due to extreme weather conditions, with gusts of over 100km/h hitting Roberts Point on the west of the island.
